Carts Greenspace's 2009 study tour investigates "growing grounds"

Tuesday 25th August 2009

Choice of site visits provided enthusiasts and community representatives with inspiration and food for thought...

Carts Greenspace organised a “Growing Grounds Study Tour” on 25th August 2009. A 30-seater bus was filled by Councillors, officers from both Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire Council, health promotion experts, community group representatives, voluntary sector organizations, potential funders, active gardeners and aspiring horticulturalists.

We visited Brediland Allotments Association in Paisley, Lochwinnoch Community Garden and, finally, Fairlie Organic Community Garden in North Ayrshire. The responses from participants were very positive, with everybody learning something to take back to their home patches. Next we plan to work with other organisations to set up a Renfrewshire “Growing Grounds” Working Group, to take forward some of the good ideas. Please contact us if you would like to be involved in this group.

New Awareness Strategy Launched

Carts Greenspace commited to spending nearly £42,000 on improving awareness of greenspace opportunities and issues...

The June 2006 Local Area Partnership meeting has also approved Carts Greenspace's first ever Awareness Strategy.  This document defines priorities for the Local Area Team's efforts in the direction of communicating about greenspace and its associated issues.

The Awareness Strategy breaks down this communication work into 5 key strands:

  1. interpretation;
  2. environmental education;
  3. encouraging participation;
  4. publicity and promotion;
  5. liaison and lobbying.

Coincidentally, five key messages have to be communicated:

  • greenspace is a vital component of our daily lives;
  • greenspace is a vulnerable resource which needs high quality management;
  • greenspace should be placed at the heart of economic, physical and community regeneration efforts;
  • greenspace enhanement projects can help to enrich the natural and built heritage components of our neighbourhoods;
  • how we can enhance our local greenspaces.

26 specific tasks, costing an estimated £41,834, are described briefly in the final section of the strategy.  These tasks include some research, the production of leaflets and newsletters, preparing and giving presentations, preparation of resource packs, design and production of interpretation panels, travelling exhibitions, public participation activities, special initiatives to engage local businesses and artists, press releases and organising special events.
